I Tried Every Protein Powder and Hated Them All — Until I Found This One

A few months ago, I developed lactose intolerance. But I’m constantly on the go and refuse to sacrifice my easiest 5-minute meal: a protein shake. Thus began my months-long quest to find a plant-based protein that didn’t piss me off. There’s a lot of them out there — I’ve tried dozens — and I haven’t liked any.
Most plant-based protein tastes terrible. Some of them were … less bad, but required a blender for a texture even resembling a drink, which defeated the whole “easy meal on the go” thing. I was about to throw in the towel and resign myself to the baby bump-esque bloating whey protein gives me when I came across Perelel.
Perelel is a female, OB/GYN-founded brand that offers targeted support for women throughout every stage of their lives. Their Triple-Support Protein is not only plant-based but also free of added sugar and artificial sweeteners. It’s also Clean Label Project certified, meaning it wasn’t on that list of lead contaminated protein powders I’ve been seeing everywhere.
After seeing hundreds of positive reviews, I decided to try it out.
Taste
Usually upon your first sip of plant-based protein, you’re hit with a lingering taste of beans, grass, or a generic (but still off-putting) earthiness. So imagine how surprised I was when I was met with a light but delicious vanilla flavor with not even a bit of bean.
I tried it with just plain water first, but this powder is super versatile. It can be added to overnight oats, smoothies, baked goods, and more without affecting the flavor much.
In the past, I stuck to chocolate protein since some additional flavor helped to cover that weird taste and I can’t stand the taste of artificial vanilla. Since Perelel uses natural flavors and wasn’t gross to begin with, I didn’t have to worry about it.
Ingredients
Yeah, women need protein. But we also need a lot of other nutrients to support our bodies and hormones. That’s why, in addition to the 20g of clean pea protein, Perelel adds 5g of no-bloat fiber and 3g of brain boosting creatine.
The pea protein used in the Triple-Support Protein has a complete amino acid profile that supports lean muscle growth and recovery. Outside of the gym, amino acids have a ton of additional benefits for women, including metabolic health and satiety.
Pea protein has also been found to not disrupt female hormones, so as someone with PCOS, I felt confident that drinking it would help, not hinder, my body.
There’s a fine line with fiber: It helps you feel fuller, promotes regularity, and supports healthy cholesterol levels, but it can also cause bloating, cramping, and gas.
The fiber included in the Triple-Support Protein is a clinically studied, low-FODMAP prebiotic that ferments slowly in the gut to keep you full without feeling like you have a balloon in your belly.
And the added creatine helps to fill nutritional gaps in your muscle stores to support brain and cognitive health. Creatine is a hot commodity nowadays, but with discourse about a loading period or increased water intake, having it in my shake was much preferred.
And, like I mentioned before, what’s in the protein is as important as what isn’t: no added sugar, no artificial sweetener.
If you’re worried by recent studies about lead in protein powder, Perelel has you covered there, too. The Triple-Support Protein is Clean Label Project Certified, meaning it’s been tested and certified for more than 100 contaminants including lead and heavy metals. It was also awarded the Clean Label Project Purity Award, meaning that not only is it certifiably clean, but it was in the top third of all protein powders tested.
Texture
The texture of most plant-based protein leaves much to be desired, unless sediment is what you’re going for, so I was pleasantly surprised at how creamy my Perelel shake was. It didn’t have any of the chalkiness or grittiness you get from other plant-based powders. Even just mixing it with water gave me a light, frothy drink.
Perelel’s protein doesn’t include a scoop in the container, but since the serving size is a rounded ⅓ cup, it’s easy enough to use a measuring cup. I won’t lie though: The amount does seem huge compared to the tiny scoops from other brands, so I added some more liquid to accommodate.
If I need a little more sustenance — or realistically, just feel less lazy — I’ll make a protein smoothie. When I added the Perelel protein, there was no noticeable change to the texture, just the addition of the light vanilla flavoring.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a way to boost your protein intake, Perelel’s Triple-Support Protein is a fantastic option that won’t leave you bloated or gassy. There’s something reassuring about a product that grows with you — it’s designed to support me through every chapter of my life, from my single days right through to pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The addition of low-FODMAP fiber and creatine makes this a clean and nutrition-packed way to boost your body and cognitive health in one simple step.
